Going into the 1996 WINSTON CUPŽ Season, only two active drivers had won more races than Rusty Wallace (those drivers are Darrell Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt). In his 11 years on the WINSTON CUPŽ circuit, Wallace has won 41 events. From his beginnings as a short track driver, Rusty has been WINSTON CUPŽ Rookie of the Year (1984) and WINSTON CUPŽ Champion (1989).

An amazingly consistent driver, Wallace has finished in the top-5 34% of the time and in the top-10 53% of the time. Rusty has finished first in 11% of his races. Joining the Penske South Team (of which he is part-owner) in 1991, Wallace won more than $1.6 million and had a total of 15 top-5 finishes in 1995, a year that was considered an "off" year for the Concord, NC based champion.
